Understanding Multiplication and Division Institute
This two-day session will combine our two popular sessions, “Understanding Area Models for Multiplication” and “Understanding Division”, into one special event. Teachers will explore the development of conceptual understanding of multiplication using area models and discuss how this visual representation can be used to make connections from whole number to fraction to polynomial multiplication that leads to fluency with the standard algorithm. Participants will learn how to use students’ experiences with learning multiplication to help them make sense of division by exploring the meaning of division and ways to help students connect division to other concepts such as place value and subtraction. Over the course of two days, teachers will come away with a deeper understanding of multiplication and division across the elementary and middle grade standards.
