The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) at the University of Mississippi is excited to partner with K-12 teachers to provide lasting impressions and valuable learning experiences to students through the STEM Exposure Excursion Program! The purpose of this program is to generate interest in and expose K-12 students to STEM education and the University of Mississippi. Through this program, the CMSE will provide coordination and logistical assistance to teachers by filling the day of the excursion with STEM-focused opportunities while getting the most from the visit to campus.

Considerations

The goals of the excursion.

Teachers will be asked to clarify the goals of the excursion on the Excursion Request Form. The goals identified by the teacher will be used to plan a beneficial excursion aimed to meet the needs of the students. A few questions that may be used to define these goals are:

  • What would you like students to get out of the trip?
  • What would you like for them to be exposed to?
  • How can we inspire them on their educational journey in the STEM fields?
  • How should the trip align with your curriculum?

The grade level of the students.

The structure of each excursion is organized based on two specific grade bands, K-6 and 7-12.

  • Kindergarten – 6th Grade
    • This grade band will participate in a “STEM Day” held at the Jackson Avenue Center on the campus of the University of Mississippi.
    • During the STEM Day, students will be broken into groups and will then participate in station rotations. The stations will include an activity or demonstration from each of the STEM fields. The STEM activities will be designed around current grade level curriculum and standards.
  • 7th Grade – 12th Grade
    • This grade band will participate in a variety of activities, demonstrations, tours, and opportunities around the campus of the University of Mississippi. On the Excursion Request Form, teachers will be asked to identify which specific activities they are interested in. Possible examples include:

Please note, campus tours are included in each of the planned excursions for this grade band.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of the excursion?

There is no charge for the services provided by the CMSE. Some activities may have charges associated, but those are indicated on the STEM Excursion Request Form. Please keep in mind that you will need to budget for transportation, lunches (if applicable), and any planned activity off campus (i.e., movie, bowling, etc.).

Does the CMSE organize lunch?

The CMSE does not typically organize lunch for excursions, but we can provide suggestions of what groups have done in the past:

  • Picnic in the grove with pizza
  • Picnic in the grove with sack lunches
  • Pizza Hut (or other nearby restaurant)
  • Rebel Market – eatery on campus
  • Union on campus

How should transportation be planned?

Buses may drop students off on campus but must park off campus in a designated lot. Buses are not required to have parking passes. Vans and vehicles may park on campus, but must obtain a visitor’s parking pass. Daily visitor parking passes ($3/vehicle) may be purchased in advance by visiting: http://www.olemiss.edu/parking/visitors.html

How long does it take to plan an excursion?

The CMSE staff appreciate as much advance notice as possible but request take at least 1 month to organize and plan a successful excursion.

What is the typical daily schedule for an excursion?

Excursions are typically scheduled on weekdays and usually begin at 9:00AM and conclude by 2:00PM. However, these times can be adjusted to fit the group’s specific scheduling needs.

Are there any limitations to the excursion program?

Although there are some limitations to the exposure excursion program, we try our best to accommodate as many students as possible. Each excursion will bring its own limitations. After completing the Excursion Request Form, each individual will be considered and further communication will take place via email.

The STEM Excursion Request Form will be available in the first part of November. If you would like to be notified once the request form is made available, please click the notify me button below and fill out the form.
