K-12 STEM Excursions
The CMSE at the University of Mississippi invites teachers to plan a STEM Excursion field trip to Ole Miss! These field trips to the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS can provide lasting impressions and valuable learning experiences. The CMSE will help teachers fill the day with wonderful STEM opportunities while getting the most from the visit to campus.
The Visit to Campus:
Consider the goals of the field trip: What would you like students to get out of the trip? What would you like for them to be exposed to? How can we inspire them on their educational journey in the STEM fields? How should the trip align with your curriculum?
On the excursion request form, you will see a variety of activities, demonstrations, tours, and opportunities.
Possible examples include:
- Tours of the Center for Manufacturing Excellence, the National Center for Physical Acoustics, or campus.
- Demonstrations of Robotics, Chemistry, or Physics
- Visiting the StarLAB Portable Planetarium
- Exploring the UM Biology Field Station
There is no charge for the coordination services provided by the CMSE. Some activities may have charges associated, but those are indicated on the STEM Excursion Request Form. Please keep in mind that you will need to budget for transportation, lunches (if applicable), and any planned activity off campus (i.e., movie, bowling, etc.).
While lunch would be “on your own” we can provide suggestions that have been used by other field trip groups:
- Picnic in the grove with pizza
- Picnic in the grove with sack lunches
- Pizza Hut
- Rebel Market – eatery on campus
How will your students get to campus? Buses may drop students off on campus but must park off campus in a designated lot. Buses are not required to have parking passes. Vans and vehicles may park on campus, but must obtain a visitor’s parking pass. Daily parking passes ($3/vehicle) may be purchased by visiting: http://www.olemiss.edu/parking/visitors.html
The CMSE’s STEM Excursion Request Form will become available on October 1, 2018. Please note, all reservation requests must be for excursions occurring after November 1, 2018.
